Overclocked: A Story about Violence Review

Overclocked

With “Overclocked: A Story about Violence” we present you today a somewhat older game that belongs to the category of point-and-click adventures. The adventure was released in 2007 by the German developer studio House of Tales. Here the player experiences a kind of interactive psychothriller, in the course of which the player must examine the fates of five patients of a psychiatry.

The story of Overclocked: A story about violence

In Overclocked, the player slips into the role of David McNamara, his character an expert in forensic psychiatry. He originally comes from Washington, but is ordered to New York by the New York Police Department (NYPD) where he is to examine five patients in a psychiatric institution on Staten Island.

These patients, who are not related to each other but are about the same age, were all disillusioned but picked up armed in New York and had no memory at all. As players with McNamara, they therefore set about gradually reconstructing the memories of the five patients.

The gameplay of Overclocked: A story about violence

Since Overclocked is a classic point-and-click adventure, the story, as usual in this genre, also occupies a large place here, while the player is able to perform a series of actions with the help of his mouse at the different locations. Whether you want to address a patient or select an object in the game world, each of these actions requires a single mouse click from the player for McNamara to perform them.

Here the player follows the action from a fixed perspective, within the respective room in which it is currently located. The conversations with the other characters in the game take place automatically and the player can choose from a number of predefined dialogues during the course of these conversations in order to steer a conversation in the desired direction.

Overclocked – the course of the game

As the game progresses, the player unlocks new locations over time, which he can then explore. David McNamara constantly comes across new clues and collects new insights, which help to solve the riddle of the five patients in the psychiatric clinic on Staten Island. However, this is made more difficult by the director of the institution, Dr. Young, a formerly recognized psychiatrist. The psychiatrist sees a competitor in the younger and, in his eyes, more successful colleague.

Moreover, during this time McNamara’s private life begins to break up slowly but surely and his wife forbids him, among other things, access to the communal apartment and wants to divorce him. Also McNamara’s best friend announces his friendship and the player only gradually learns about the many demons that plague the protagonist of the game.

Technical requirements of Overclocked

Overclocked already appeared in 2007, which is why the title, which was developed on the Cougar engine by Tobias Schachte, is graphically a bit dusty today. However, the game is a classic Point & Click Adventure and they age relatively well, so overclocked, so the title still knows how to please today. So all places, where the story takes place, are still well recognizable for today’s conditions and even shine with some details.

Nevertheless, the game can’t keep up with today’s graphical standards anymore, which doesn’t harm the game fun even today. So Overclocked is still worth a look today for PC players who are interested in adventure games. Since Overclocked has already 11 years on the hump, the game is playable on almost every modern PC without any problems.

The minimum system requirements are according to the manufacturer as follows:

  • 1.3 GHz processor
  • Graphics card with ShaderModel 1.1
  • approx. 1.5 GB free hard disk space
  • 256 MB RAM (Windows 2000/XP)
  • 512 MB RAM (Vista)

The reviews on Overclocked: A story about violence

The reviews that Overclocked received from the press at the time of its release were extremely mixed, but nobody wanted to deny the game’s appeal. The title had an average Metacritic score of 70%, based on 19 international ratings. While the title received a lot of praise for its story and its deep characters, the low-detail graphics and low puzzle standards were particularly criticized.

Subsequently, Overclocked was awarded the Innovation Prize at the German Developer Award in 2007 and the 4Players Game of the Year Award.
